One night I had a dream that we went on vacation. Don’t laugh, any of you with kids knows how pricey it gets to haul around a gaggle of screaming kids, not to mention the headaches of planning and execution of a so-called “relaxing vacation”. Don’t get me wrong, I love going to visit tropical places as much a the next gal, but is that practical with 3 boys, and a dad who says that “we’ll need a vacation from our vacation”?
Back to my dream…it was fantastic, relaxing, and the kids were quietly humming in the back seat of our minivan. How did I do it? I followed these suggestions from family travel expert Emily Kaufman, “The Travel Mom”:
- Create a boredom bag. Convert a hanging travel cosmetic case into a case full of fun and hang it from the seat back in front of the kids’ seats. Consider creating fun works of art with Twizzlers
Pull ‘n’ Peel Candy before snacking on them! - Take your trip “online.” From GPS systems to phone applications, trips are no longer a navigation nightmare.
- Think through the snacks you pack. Avoid packing snacks that are easy to spill like juice boxes or snacks that melt. Try plastic bottles with sports tops and bring along Twizzlers Candy or Twizzlers Nibs Candy – they are easy to share and don’t melt, making them the perfect car ride treat.
So while the kids were in the backseat humming to our favorite tunes, the were snacking away on their Twizzlers…very happy campers indeed! Where we went wasn’t important, the most important part was that we did it together without the yelling and craziness of our normal vacations. But if you must know, we were headed to the Jersey Shore, a favorite for our family…and an especially long road trip since we live in good old Texas!
