Healthy Home Remedies

Even though you can find store shelves full of chemicals to treat anything from eczema to warts, there are ways to treat those same problems with more natural solutions.

My son and I were watching the TV show “The Doctors” about home remedies. We learned a lot of new remedies, plus reinforced some that I already knew. Here’s a short list of some of the remedies I use (or plan to try).

Eczema

Rub Tea Tree Oil on the affected area and then cover with A & D ointment (the clear one, not the creamy). On the scalp, it’s easier to put the Tea Tree Oil on with a dropper, like the ones used for baby medicine. See my post about eczema for more information and remedies.

Leg or foot cramps

You could be low in Potassium, Magnesium, or both. Bananas contain both potassium and magnesium, so I guess you could say “a banana a day keeps the cramps away”. lol

Rashes

As long as it’s a regular rash and not an open wound, try this remedy from The Doctors, combine equal parts of olive oil and honey and rub on the affected area. Olive oil is a moisturizer, and honey is a natural antiseptic, since it has both antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Bladder infections

Drink cranberry juice. This is the most common home remedy for urinary tract infections. But did you know that you should look for 100% juice? Cranberry juice cocktail will work, but not as quickly, and you’ll be taking in a ton of sugar with it. Stick with the 100% juice.

Warts

Although the common treatment of salicylic acid works fairly well, you can also use ascorbic acid if you have Vitamin C tablets ay home. Crush the Vitamin C tablets into a power and then mix add water to make a paste. Scrub the wart, then put the paste on and cover with a band-aid. Covering it is critical, since it will force the acid into to wart.

Antibacterial wipes

You can make your own antibacterial wipes at home that are healthy for the whole family. Mix equal parts of baby lotion and rubbing alcohol. Put the mixture in a plastic container, old baby wipes containers work well for this. Put a stack of paper towels into the mixture and allow them to soak it up before using. Keep tightly sealed or alcohol will evaporate.

Antibacterial Spray

There are 2 recipes that I’ve seen that work quite well. The first is one cup of water and 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil. Tea Tree Oil is a natural antibacterial and antifungal, and kills most germs. The second is one cup of water and 20 drops of essential lavender oil. Lavender Oil is also an antibacterial. You can also add alcohol to either one of these recipes for a stronger antibacterial. You can refill hand sanitizer bottles or sprays, or use it to sanitize countertops.

And as Dr. Lisa from “The Doctors” says for stress relief, “the best spa is in your own home”. What a great home remedy!!

Have you tried any others that have worked for you? Let us know!!

Off to mix some hand spray. TTYL!
