When you look in the mirror, do your pores seem to overpower your face? Are you plagued with little black dots that muddy your complexion? Your pores are telling you something, you better get them under control.

First we need to talk about what makes them look so large in the first place. Your pores are actually little openings in your skin, where your sweat glands are located. The initial size of your pores is determined when you are born. Sweat and oil is secreted through these little openings to hydrate your skin. Excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells that get clogged in the pores make them larger. Anything that gets caught in the pores then turns black and makes them look even larger. Sun damage also increases the size of your pores. This is because sun damage reduces the elasticity of your skin, making it harder for your pores to close when you cleanse your face.

Now that you know what causes your pores to appear larger, you can take the steps to reduce them and make them nearly invisible:

  1. Wash your face twice a day with a cleanser that’s appropriate for your skin. Don’t just assume that your skin is oily because you have acne or blackheads. Acne can also be a symptom of clogged pores from dry skin. Check out my post on finding the right skin care if you’re not sure.
  2. Deep exfoliation twice a week to clean out your pores. It also helps get rid of the dry, dead skin cells and excess oil so that they stay clean. Deep exfoliation can also help alleviate some of the problems caused by sun damage. It will help make your skin more supple and allow the pores to return to normal size. If you have any questions on deep exfoliation, check out some of my previous articles and then contact me if you’re still not sure.
  3. Lightly exfoliate once a day to keep the pores clean. I suggest to do this in the morning, so that your skin looks bright and clean for your daily activities.
  4. Make sure to use a toner before applying moisturizer or foundation. This will reduce the size of the pores even more, and will minimize how much is sucked into the pores.
  5. Make sure to use a moisturizer engineered for your skin type. Again, don’t be fooled into thinking that your skin is oily if you have acne. Only use an oil control moisturizer if you know you have too much oil. For most people, this can only be done with a professional skin analysis.

By using these simple steps, you can minimize the actual size or your pores.

To ensure that you’re using the correct types of products for your skin, contact me for a complimentary skin analysis. I can also do this long distance by sending you the sensors and then I can complete the analysis by email or phone. The analysis will tell you the level of oil, dryness, skin damage, etc, and I can send it to you via email. All very good information when you’re trying to find the correct types of products for your skin.
