Aging Gracefully? Not ME!

Chemical Exfoliations

Ever heard the old adage “she’s aging gracefully”? That doesn’t describe me even one little bit…I’m fighting tooth and nail.

I’m not one of those women who pays a fortune for skin care, spas, Botox, chemical peels, etc. But I do take really good care of my skin, and I do 99.9% of it at home. The one time I ventured into a spa, I came out looking like Frankenstein because the esthetician thought it was necessary to pop and squeeze every little thing on my face. And then she proceeded to slather me up to the point that my sunglasses wouldn’t stay on my face when I walked out the door. Needless to say, I broke out horrendously the next day and for weeks afterwards. It was just too much…for my face AND my wallet.

Do you think I just gave up and gave in to “aging gracefully”? Absolutely not! I pride myself on looking many years younger than I am. I’m in my early 40’s and have 3 children, one of them only 5 years old. So when dropping off or picking up from school, I find myself surrounded by 20 and 30 somethings. Do they think I’m in my 40’s, not from what I’ve been told. They think I look like I’m in my early to mid 30’s, so I guess what I’m doing at home is working 😉

So what do I do to stave off wrinkles and early signs of aging? Here are some tips:

  • Use a good sunscreen on your face EVERY DAY, not just in the summer. Something with Titanium Dioxide or Zinc is preferable because they’re physical sunblocks, NOT sunscreens.
  • Don’t go to sleep with makeup on. You can’t imagine how many clients I have that complain about wrinkles and acne, and still leave makeup on at night. If you don’t like the result, than change what you’re doing that causes it.
  • Make sure you use toner. I hear all sorts of complaints about toners: they’re drying, they burn, it doesn’t help. Then CHANGE the toner you’re using. Toner helps balance PH and closes the pores.
  • Use skin care targeted for your skin type AND age. It’s not just about oily or dry. If you’re in your 50’s, you don’t need the same skin care as someone in their 20’s, it’s as simple as that.
  • Anti-oxidants are your friends. Vitamin C, Green Tea, Vitamin D, Grape Seed Oil; all great examples of anti-oxidants that are good for your skin.
  • Exfoliate at least twice a week. People of every age can benefit from this. I did a dermabrasion on an 85-year-old woman and her skin looked fantastic afterwards.
  • And this is the biggie: DON’T USE SOAP on your face! The clients I have with the worst skin for their age all use soap on their face, and then try to make up for it with a heavy moisturizer. Soap completely strips everything off your skin, including the necessary oils.
